I have been using Pidgin for all my instant messaging for years now. It handles among others GTalk, Facebook chat, ICQ, MSN and IRC. I also use it for AIM and Yahoo messaging. Pidgin is based on the libpurple library.

Pidgin is open source, completely free, and supports most operating systems. Pidgin comes with a lot of plugins, and there are more available. One of the more popular additions to Pidgin is the Purple Plugin Pack.
